“I want people to feel confident in what they’re wearing even if they can’t afford to spend a lot of money and that’s why I like highlighting thrifted looks on my social media pages.”

I prefer shopping at thrift stores because it lowers my environmental footprint and helps me save money. I’m thankful I grew up with a grandmother who normalized thrift-shopping and deal-finding because I never felt any stigma associated with buying secondhand. I think her thriftiness and love of plants really helped shape my love of environmentalism, which grew over time and I’m so thankful for that.

I really believe in accessibility, in many areas of life from equal access to nature, drinking water, and that also extends to clothing. I want people to feel confident in what they’re wearing even if they can’t afford to spend a lot of money and that’s why I like highlighting thrifted looks on my social media pages.

“I feel more comfortable with myself and who I’m supposed to be. I’m not shrinking for the comfort of others or avoiding discomfort by staying stagnant in my own life.”

I always wanted to work in sustainable manufacturing and especially apparel after I realized I wanted to make sustainability my livelihood. I love companies that make quality products and try their hardest to not cause unneeded harm to people or the planet. That’s what led me to work at Patagonia, one of the largest sustainable apparel companies in the world.

I’ve really just been on this transformative journey right now and trying my best to follow my purpose. I’ve gotten really distracted in the past, but now I feel more comfortable with myself and who I’m supposed to be. I’m not shrinking for the comfort of others or avoiding discomfort by staying stagnant in my own life. I know it sounds silly, but I honestly believe when I reduce my environmental impact, advocate for others, and practice self-care I’m at my happiest self. My blog helps me accomplish some of those goals as well as my job!

For this piece I’ll be sharing mostly thrifted pieces for my week of outfits.

Corduroy dress for fall // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

I got this overall dress from Goodwill as well as the top. I’ve really loved 70s-inspired outfits and the color of the corduroy was really reminiscent of that. It makes me feel fun, but I dress it up so I don’t look too young with a pair of black velvet booties that I also thrifted! My office is pretty casual so I can experiment with outfits a bit more which is fun!

Thrifted denim dress with yellow shoes // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

This outfit is new and entirely thrifted at the same time! If you didn’t know, Goodwill gets a lot of overstock and a lot of it from Target. I picked up this dress and mustard mueles from Goodwill for over 50% off their regular price and they’re both from Target’s Vintage Threads collection which channels a lot of 70s and boho style.

Thrifted black and white floral jumpsuit with modern sandals // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

These shoes are from Target and the jumpsuit is thrifted. I try to be 80/20 when it comes to thrifting and purchasing new items. Sometimes shoe styles that I’m looking for aren’t always at the thrift shop so I’ll go out and snag a cute pair. These are my favorites!

Thursday

Farmer-chic outfit // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

I got this denim dress at an event in college called “Swap not Shop” which was my favorite event of the year where you could swap clothes. The shirt is also from Goodwill and the shoes are from Target. It really gives me 70s “farmer-chic” vibe which describes my style right now pretty well. I’m not sure how I got here, but I gravitate towards pieces with earthy 70s influence.

Denim skirt with band t-shirt // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

I got this Pink Floyd shirt at Goodwill because I liked the pretty colors and the denim skirt is from H&M Conscious collection (their eco-friendly line). On the weekends I really just like wearing a nice vintage shirt and denim for a slightly edgy look.

Saturday

Thrifted red floral dress by Jolt // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

Saturdays are when I can dress “extra” which is why I look forward to them so much. I actually wore this dress on Saturday for my going away party before my move to Santa Barbara. I found it at Goodwill in my size and it’s from Jolt (sold at Nordstrom Rack) funny enough, the designer of the dress was actually someone I’d previously connected with on Instagram! It was really expensive new, but I got it for $8!

Sunday

Cute peasant top and thrifted jeans // A Week Of 1970s-Inspired Outfits With Leah Thomas, The Sustainable Lifestyle Blogger Behind Green Girl Leah on The Good Trade

On Sundays I like to be a little more relaxed and wear clothes that are airy. I got these Vera Wang jeans from Goodwill and the clutch from social enterprise Anchal Project. The shirt is from a clothing swap event at school and the shoes are thrifted target overstock from Goodwill as well.

Today's photos taken by Leah de Leon.
