Sew Reporter – 1st August

admin

Hello sewing pals! Welcome to this weeks round-up of new patterns, sewing inspiration and a dose of stitching-related things to keep you entertained. Whether we have rain, shine or a bit of everything, we’ve got plenty to keep your weekend filled with your favourite hobby. Have a great Sunday everyone!

When Lilly’s review popped up we all got very excited… a sewing project for GARDENING! It’s actually the dream make and is going straight to the to-sew list (we are avid gardeners too!)! Lilly used the popular Harlene dungarees by Merchant and Mills to stitch up this practical garment, we think it’s fab.

Well, this is blooming lovely, isn’t it? Chuleenan @CSews made the Adrienne blouse from Friday Pattern Company in this bold and summery floral rayon. It’s a great summer make.

Megan @Sewing_Scot joined the Zadie Appreciation Society with her latest make, describing it as a “new favourite”! Made in this gorgeous plum purple linen fabric, the Zadie jumpsuit from Paper Theory Patterns never fails to capture our hearts.

Kathy of @sewdainty has finally found out what all the fuss is about with her latest make. Concerned about catching the signature big sleeves on door handles, Kathy made the McCall’s M7969 with simpler sleeves and added some elastic to create a cute gathered short sleeve. She shared all the details in her review!

WOWZERS! Lena King stopped us in our tracks with her show-stopping Paloma dress from Emporia Patterns made in this striking Ankara print wax cotton. The length of this dress showcases the print and Lena shares details of the making process on her blog, it’s a must-read!

It may be summer here in the UK (well, that’s debatable), but Oh Sew Fearless who lives in New Zealand, is on her winter makes! This Opium coat from Deer and Doe “has the perfect swing” and is well worth the extra effort that goes into making a coat. It’s wonderful!

We love a flouncy sleeve, and this one adds just enough flair to a classic shirt silhouette. Natasha made the Morningside dress and shirt from French Navy Now in this fun Hawaiian print and shared her thoughts on the making process in this review!

Tabitha Sewer @tabithasewer

Self drafting is a SUPERPOWER! Tabitha @tabithasewer has blown our minds with this dreamy birthday dress, it’s absolutely breathtaking! Tabitha recreated an expensive designer dress for a fraction of the cost. And without a pattern…it’s magic! Be sure to follow @tabithasewer because this isn’t the first (or last) wow-worthy dress!

Mel found the prettiest setting to capture her latest make, the Meridian dress from Papercut Patterns, don’t you think? We love the way this pattern ties around the front and back, and the enzyme washed linen Mel picked is the perfect pairing.

Purple Sewing Cloud's Anthea blouse hack

We love an Anthea blouse and we love a pattern hack, so it’s no surprise that we adore Purple Sewing Cloud’s me-made creation! Samantha used the Anthea blouse pattern from Anna Allen and hacked into this beautiful dress by adding a gathered skirt. We want one!

We’ve had a lovely lot of indie sewing patterns hit the shop this week. From new-to-us designer Kosedo Studio, to a swimsuit from Helen’s Closet that’s an ideal pattern for your first go at sewing swimwear, PLUS two staple knit tops that you can make again and again. Happy browsing!

Do you already have a specific design in mind? Or do you need some help finding the perfect pattern for your fabric? You can search all the patterns in our database using our newly updated sewing-specific search tool.

Sew Over 50 August challenge

Keep your eyes peeled for inspiration and ideas for using up your scraps with the Sew Over 50 community challenge which is kicking off TODAY! Throughout the month of August, the Sew Over 50 gang will be challenging participants to use ‘waste’ fabric to make a garment. The aim is to use up fabric that is already in the system, such as your remnants, charity shop or thrift fabric from estate sales, vintage fabrics, manufacturing waste, fabric picked up from fabric swap tables at meetups or from sewist’s destashes, discarded garments or tablecloths or bed linen.

The challenges is will be open to all and there will be prizes up for grabs, plus guest editor posts to inspire and inform you. We’d better get rifling through our remnants!

Follow the Instagram account @sewover50 and the hashtag #So50SustainableSewing to find out how to get involved!
