Sew the trends is back for Spring!! Have you noticed the nights are getting lighter and it’s a little warmer? It’s time to dust off the sewing machine, lather on the fake tan and start making some beautiful things to wear for the coming months. I’ve hit the high street with gusto and spent a very happy few hours browsing the shops for the latest spring trends. I’ve paired patterns with this season’s hottest looks, it’s time to start planning your summer makes. All the patterns mentioned in the video are below.

Outerwear:
Quilted jackets are making an appearance again this summer..chilly British nights make this a perfect addition to your wardrobe. I’ve got two fantastic patterns for you to choose from the first is the Hovea Coat from Megan Nielsen, with two fantastic variations this is a really versatile make. Another fantastic pattern and one that I’ve sewn myself is the Ayora Jacket from Pauline Alice.
Tweed Channel inspired jackets were all over the high street, I saw a lot of matching co-ords if you wanted to go the whole hog! There were the classic cropped versions alongside some slightly longer ones. The key to this will be finding a beautiful boucle fabric. The pattern I found that I think is a perfect match is the Felix Jacket from pattern Union. This has a cropped version as well as a slightly longer so with one pattern you could make both styles.
Tops:
I was really excited to see this shape everywhere this summer.. it’s one that I think a lot of you will love. The great thing about this is that it’s a classic shape so will never go out of style. I’ve got two fantastic options for you to choose from. The first is the Cortney top from Marsha Style which also has a dress variation. It’s a popover style so it’s pulled over the head. If you are wanting something that buttons all the way down then the Anthea Blouse from Anna Allen would be another great option.
This style of blouse was in a lot of the shops and as soon as I saw it two patterns sprang instantly to mind. For those of you that love the point collar shape then the Patina Blouse from Friday Pattern Company is perfect for you. You could add the little ruffle detail too if you wanted. For those of you that love the ruffle we thought that the Honey Top from Fibre Mood would be a fantastic option too.
Waistcoats:
For those of us who lived this first time round the 90s are back. Does anyone else remember the waistcoat phase?! The key is that they match your bottoms so you’ll need to whip up a pair of bottoms too. The pattern that we found that we thought was perfect is the Miller waistcoat from Merchant and Mills.
This super shaped collar was really polular, I saw a lot of knitwear pieces alongside a more sporty look like the one from Arket. As soon as I saw these pieces it reminded me of the Didi pullover from Fibre Mood. This was almost spot on and would be a great addition to your spring wardrobe.
Dresses:
There were loads of fantastic dresses but this shape was a clear front runner for me. The shaped seamline under the bust and buttons down front reminded me of a fourties tea dress. Luckily Named patterns latest release was an almost perfect match. The Taika dress had a lot of the key features and would be lovely for this summer!
Details – Twists:
Twisted details featured on lots of tops and dresses and I thought this would be a simple way to nod to the spring trends without going overboard. The top that I thought would be a fantastic option if you wanted to make something in jersey is the Amori twsit top from Papercut Patterns. If you wanted to make a dress then the twist dress from Trend Patterns would be a fantatic option for a woven.
Skirts:
Skirts are short this season!! A lot of them were styled with the tweed jackets – a bit of a Clueless vibe going on here! They are actually a lovely simple make and once you’ve nailed the fit you can whip them up pretty quickly. I have picked two patterns one that’s a little longer as I thought that might be more appealing! The short version I thought Ava Skirt from Sew Over It would be a fantastic option. For those that might like something a tad longer then the Barkly Skirt from In The Folds would work well.
Bottoms:
Wide legged cropped trousers are back again this summer and something that doesn’t seem to be going away. There are two fantastic patterns that I’ve got to share with you. The first is a new pattern from Common Stitch called the Bottlebrush Pants, with fantastic pockets. The second is a cult classic, the Free Range Slacks from Sew House Seven. So many of you guys have made these and love them!
These may look very similar to the trousers above but don’t be fooled! These are actually made out of a ponte jersey.. I know. Taking comfort to a new level and they look fantastic, double win. As soon as I saw these I thought that the Joan Trousers from Friday Pattern Companywould be the perfect pattern to recreate this look.
