2021 handbag trends to carry into winter and fall

admin

I’ve already taken you through the major fall trends, coat trends, shoe trends and color trends for the new season, so let’s turn to handbags. Maybe you have your eye on a new handbag for fall, or you will put one on your festive wishlist later in the year. Either way, these 2021 handbag trends (below) should inspire you…

travel bags

While many of you have been unable to travel where you would have wanted to over the past, that obviously hasn’t stopped the fall 2021 designers from having travel on their mind.

Many opted to feature their models in travel related photoshoots or to provide them with suitcases and large travel bags as their main accessory.

frame it

Inspired by decades gone by, the frame bag is making a fashion comeback for fall. As this kind of bag, or coin purse, is seen as a little unfashioned, I would team it with a very modern outfit.

Or you could choose to play up the elegance of a frame bag and wear with your evening outfits.

puffy or quilted bags

Extra volume on your shoes has been a trend for a couple of seasons now, and is also being featured on handbags for fall. You can also see that puffed coat styles are particularly on trend – just don’t wear puffy shoes, coats and bags all at once!

ready for business

Hermès – Tory Burch – Max Mara

It’s unlikely that you’ve been into the office much over the past 18 months even if you usually work 9-5. But it seems that designers have their mind on business. Look out for tote bags and satchels.

You don’t have to keep these to go with your workwear. They also look great with jeans and a t-shirt for a preppy style.

chain details

Sometimes it’s about the little details when it comes to updating your accessories. Big chains are among the jewelry trends this winter and fall, and also featured on handbag straps. You can see from the images above that the on trend way to carry them isn’t to use the strap at all, but to carry this style as a clutch bag.

cozy faux fur and shearling

It’s usual to see faux fur coats featured on the catwalks and in stores for the colder months. But you can also give your outfit a cozy feel with your handbag. If you get really cold, I guess you could always pop your hands inside!

fringed

Fringing also featured on coats on the designer runways. But an easier, more subtle way to wear the trend can be to include fringing on your handbag. You can see Isabel Marant (above, center) combined fringing with one of fall’s key color trends – green.

metallics

Dolce & Gabbana – Burberry – Gucci

Gold and silver featured heavily across clothing and shoe trends, and also handbags. A metallic handbag could add an unexpected dimension to your daywear. I saw designers team gold bags with beige coats and silver bags with gray coats for a sophisticated look.

You could also choose a metallic clutch bag to update your little black dress.

lock it up

The fastening on your bag doesn’t necessarily have to be functional. It can also be there purely for decoration as shown at the likes of Versace and Loewe.

prints

A great way to liven up your existing outfits can be to add a print bag. Choose a floral or geometric print.

camera straps

One of the microtrends seen on the fall 2021 catwalks was the camera strap as a way to carry your handbag. Whether you’re carrying a camera with you or not, a wide strap will add modernity to your outfit.

animal print

Animal print is one of those perennial style staples that doesn’t date. Choose any animal print that you prefer whether leopard, zebra or snake print.

matchy matchy

While being overly matching was previously seen as old-fashioned, being coordinated is now very much on trend.

quirky

Gucci – Schiaparelli – STAUD

You can definitely have some fun with your handbags for the fall season. There were plenty of playful bags to choose from, including Gucci’s riding horse hat, Schiaparelli’s faces and the noughts and crosses game that featured on Staud’s handbags.

oval

Circular handbags have been particularly on trend for the past few seasons. However, the curvy trend of the moment is to carry an oval shape. Obviously, the bags shown above won’t fit very much in so I would use instead of a clutch bag with your evening looks.

triangular

Another unusual shape you could choose for your handbags is a triangle where the base of the bag is wider than the top. Valentino mixed a triangular look with pale pink which is a big color trend for fall.

asymmetry

Asymmetry can add an edge to your outfit whether you choose an asymmetrical hemline on your dress or skirt, an asymmetric sleeve top or an asymmetric handbag.
