We get asked a lot about what are the most popular indie patterns so we thought we would put together all the maker inspiration for your favourite sewing patterns on the site. For the keen makers, I’m sure a lot of these won’t be a surprise but there were a few in there we hadn’t guessed! We’ve updated our review system this week to make it much easier to use. You can now edit old reviews, add multiple images and they look a lot more inspiring on the product pages. Hurrah.

We love to see what you’re making so if you have a few spare minutes this weekend why not leave a review of your latest make. Sewing pattern reviews are a great help to other makers and it’s a lovely way to share your creative journey.
Zadie jumpsuit PDF – Paper Theory Patterns

The Zadie Jumpsuit by Paper Theory has turned into a cult classic within the sewing community. Many of you will have made it, have one cut out ready to go or are planning your next one! So what makes this pattern so special? Tara who designs the patterns has been working as a pattern cutter within the fashion industry for well over a decade and knows her stuff. Her patterns are graded every three sizes, rather than the traditional one grade fits all, that most companies do. What this means is the fit from the smaller to the larger sizes is fantastic and the proof is in the pudding. As well as having loads of reviews on our site make sure you go and check out the hashtag on instagram too. The pattern features a wrap style jumpsuit with loose legs and an option to add longer sleeves making it a great option for winter too!

Size Range: UK 6-28, available as PDF or copy shop from our online shop.

Ogden Cami  – True Bias

The Ogden Cami by True Bias is another fantastic pattern that is a firm favourite on the site. This classic shape is timeless and it also uses just over a metre of fabric making it a fantastic stash buster. The pattern features fine straps and it’s sleek clean finish around the neckline is thanks to a facing. The fit on this pattern is great as it flares slightly from the bust. Women with bigger bust might want to add a small bust dart  – this really helped when Rachel made her version. It’s a great layering piece meaning you’re going to be wearing this all year round.

Sizes UK 8-20, available as a PDF or paper pattern from our online shop.

Hinterland dress – Sew Liberated

The Hinterland dress by Sew Liberated is a classic shape that a lot of you love, to the point we can barely keep this pattern in stock! It’s interesting that there seem to be less reviews of this pattern but Instagram hold some really lovely options, if you’ve made this please leave a review so we can see! I think the secret to it’s success is it’s shape, one that flatters a lot of body shapes and a relaxed fit. The pattern comes with a sleeve and sleeveless option as well as a button placket that stops at the waistline or continues to the hem.  It’s a versatile pattern that can take you through the seasons with a sleeveless option for summer or full length sleeve to wear in the colder months – pair with tights and boots and you’re ready to go.

Sizes UK 8-24, available as PDF or paper pattern from our online shop.

York Pinafore – Helen’s Closet

The York Pinafore from Helen’s Closet is a really fantastic option for beginners, it’s got a small number of pattern pieces and it’s simple to fit. There are two variations, choose from a high neck or low neck with different pocket options. The fit is slightly cocoon in shape on the skirt making it great if you’re pear shaped. This is definitely one of those patterns that you don’t make once, so many people have made it and loved this pattern. With all the layering options for your handmade wardrobe underneath  – what’s not to love?

Kielo Wrap Dress – Named Clothing Kuvassa: Heini Salonen Kuvassa: Heini Salonen

The Kielo wrap dress from Named Clothing is probably to oldest of the patterns featured in this blog but boy oh boy do you guys love this! The pattern is interesting, with two large front and back pieces and long ties that make up this pattern. Simply wrap the ties around you and you’re done. This pattern is designed to be made in jersey but it has also been made many many times in woven fabrics and works just as well! It’s simple construction and dramatic shape, makes it a firm favourite with you all.

Sizes UK 4-18, available as PDF and paper pattern in our online shop.

Sirocco Jumpsuit – Deer and Doe

The Sirocco Jumpsuit from Deer and Doe was released this year, and pretty much broke the internet –  we couldn’t get enough of them! The interesting thing about this pattern is that it’s designed for jersey, so there are no fastenings and you literally just pull it on. The key thing when thinking about making this jumpsuit is picking the correct jersey, one with a bit of structure so that it bounces back. Deer and Does patterns are cut with curve in mind, they are particularly flattering if you are pear shaped.

Sizes UK 4-18, available as a Paper pattern in our online shop.

Adrienne Blouse – Friday Pattern Company

The Adrienne blouse by The Friday Pattern Company is a fantastic jersey pattern that is made up of just three pattern pieces! It’s a simple construction and uses elastic on the cuff and over the shoulders to give you ‘that sleeve.’ It’s been made so many different times and I’ve really enjoyed seeing the hacking potential of this on Instagram. Rachel has also made this blouse using some left over fabric from her stash and paired with jeans it’s a great top for wearing out and about.

Sizes UK 6-28, available as a PDF or paper pattern in our online shop.

Toaster Sweaters – Sew House Seven

I think the Toaster sweater by Sew House Seven was ‘the pattern’ that a huge number of the sewing community were making last winter  – Rachel included! It’s simple shape and interesting neckline options make it really versatile. This is a jersey pattern and can be made in a standard weight jersey or in something like a sweatshirting if you want a much warmer top. If you’ve made one – why not leave a review and share your creative journey.

Charlie Caftan – Closet Case Patterns

The Charlie caftan by Closet Case Patterns is such a great dress for summer… we’ve both made it and are part of the fan club! It’s got an interesting construction and the pattern pieces look a little wild when you cut them out but it comes together pretty quickly. There are two sleeve variations (one more dramatic than the other) and two length options. It really is a perfect dress for holidays and it’s been photographed so many times with blue skies in the background I think everyone else had the same idea too!

Sizes UK 2-24, available as a Paper pattern on our online shop.

Kew Dress – Nina Lee

The Kew dress by Nina Lee has inspired a hoard of makers to embark upon making this. I think it must be the dress the sewing community wore to summer events and weddings over the last couple of years and I can see why! There are three versions of this pattern, two dress options as well as a skirt. It can be made in a whole host of different fabrics and you’re going to become great friends with your button holer while making this!

Sizes UK 6-20, available as PDF or paper pattern on our online shop.
