The Relevant Ballads – an introduction

– by Z.V. House

About “The Relevant Ballads”:

Hello all! Given that this is my first week on the job here at Treasured Valley I suppose I should give a little introduction to what all this noise is and why you should spend your week drooling in anticipation of its Monday arrival.

The title of this segment is from a Destroyer song and any additional explanation would require an extensive lesson on “man-crushes” and the role they play in my life. The objective of “The Relevant Ballads” is a simple one: highlight original independent music coming out of the Treasure Valley. This will manifest itself as a weekly update of upcoming shows in the valley and a monthly in-depth spotlight on a local band, venue, etc. Got a tip? Great! Send it here. I look forward to sharing your Mondays with you!

Chapter One: “This one’s for the critics and their disappointed mothers”

The two “must see” shows for the coming week are both at the Visual Arts Collective. First off, on Wednesday VAC will be celebrating their four year birthday with a concert featuring the fantastic Smile Brigade from Seattle and locals The Very Most and A Seasonal Disguise. Tickets are $5 at the doors which open at 8pm. $1 from each ticket will go directly to benefit the Idaho Humane Society. Second, on Sunday twelve Boise bands will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the release There’s Nothing Wrong With Love by performing one song each from this classic Built to Spill album. Show starts at 5pm and tickets are sold on a sliding scale between $5 and $15. All of the proceeds from this event will be donated to help cover the medical expenses of the Jensen family.

Other great shows coming up this week are Slow Skate and Hillfolk Noir playing at The Flying M in Nampa on Thursday and again on Friday at the Neurolux in Boise. Also on Friday is a benefit for BSU’s Pulse Student Radio at  the Knitting Factory with Le FleurATTNArdentApple Horse, and We Won The Science Fair.

Get out, show some love, rock on!
