The Relevant Ballads: Live Underground Music

Our top pick this week is the Boise Community Radio benefit show TONIGHT at the Visual Arts Collective. Headlining are hometown heroes Built to Spill with J&L Defer, Beautician and Bales of Hey! opening. All proceeds from this event will be put towards getting Radio Boise on the air giving the Treasure Valley its only independent community based radio station. Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 9pm, 21+.

Also this week Juntura will be playing with Pink Mountain Tops on Tuesday at Neurolux. $5, 8pm 21+. Wednesday The Universal will be playing at Neurolux with the earth shattering Red Fang. $10, 8pm 21+

Our top pick this week is ReVoLtReVoLt‘s album release party Wednesday night at Neurolux. They will be joined by local favorites Juntura to celebrate the release of their new album Chordata (you can pick up a copy here starting tomorrow). Show starts around 8pm, 21+ and costs $5 at the door. If you can’t make it Wednesday they’ll be throwing a second release party at The Record Exchange on Friday. This event will be open to all ages, is free and starts at 7pm.

Also this week Low-fi will be playing with The Stagger and Sway on Friday at Pengilly’s. There is no cover and the music starts at 9pm, 21+. Saturday, Hillfolk Noir will be playing with out of towners Kites and Crows at the Flying M Coffeegarage in Nampa. Show is $2, open to all ages and starts at 8pm.

For those of you who haven’t heard Built to Spill will be headlining a benefit for Boise Community Radio at the Visual Arts Collective a week from today. This is sure to be a grand night featuring our hometown heroes benefiting local, independent, community radio right here in the Treasure Valley. Tickets are on sale now be sure to get yours before they’re gone!

Our top pick this week is Finn Riggins mighty return to home turf on Wednesday night at Neurolux. After a month of road running following the release of their superb album Vs. Wilderness they’re back spew rock ‘n roll chaos upon us all. Mousy Brown and Scarf round out this all local bill with things getting way around 8pm. $3 at the door, 21+ only. If you’ve got plans Wednesday Finn Riggins will also be playing at Boise State Special Events Center on Tuesday night. Local indie-pop favorites Spondee will also be playing this free all ages show starting at 7:30 pm.

Also this week, Hillfolk Noir will share the stage with Horse Feathers at the Neurolux on Tuesday night. This show is 21+ and costs $3 at the door. Thursday night The Arctic Turtles, The Suits, and The Very Most will be playing at Liquid in Boise. This free show starts at 9pm and is 21+ only.

Top pick this week is the Flying M Coffee Garage’s Friday show featuring Boise’s brilliant The Universal and New York’s The Electric Tickle Machine. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to make it out to the M or some of Nampa’s great thrift stores this could just be it! All ages, $3, music starts at 8pm.

ElectricTickleMachinePosterAlso this week…Gizzard Stone will be rocking Neurolux with out of towner Andy Davis on Wednesday. 21+, $5 at the door. On Friday Pussy Gutt will be celebrating the release of their newest record at the Neurolux. This band always puts on one helluva show and I’m sure this night will be no exception. Beautician will also be performing and it’s only $3 to get in for all those 21+.

Top pick this week is the Halloween extravaganza at the Visual Arts Collective. This event is happening on both October 30th and on Halloween itself. Both nights will feature an absolute extravaganza with music by Nollifur and live performances by the Red Light Variety Show. Friday Le Fleur will be opening and Saturday Pussygutt will be kicking things off. Doors at 8pm both nights and it’s $15.

Also this week…

Tuesday VAC will be hosting a benefit for Conservation Voters for Idaho with 21 musicians covering the works of local songwriter Bill Coffey. Tickets are $10 at the door or $20 with a one year membership to Conservation Voters for Idaho and it all gets started at 6:30.

Wednesday Larry & His Flask and ReVoLtReVoLt will be playing at Neurolux $3 at the door. Also on Wednesday The Daredevil Christopher Wright, Spondee and A Seasonal Disguise will also be playing at VAC, doors at 8pm $5. Thursday at VAC La Knots, ReVoLtReVoLt and The Pack AD. Be there at 8pm and its $5 to get in.

Note: All shows in the Relevant Ballads this week are 21 and over.

Thursday seems to be the night for music with three delicious shows! Spondee will be playing at Liquid starting at 9pm and the show is free to all those 21+. Visual Arts Collective is hosting Mirah, Norfolk and Western, who are playing with Boise’s tremendous Fauxbois. $10 at the doors which open at 8pm, 21+. Last but not least Weatherbox, Little Brazil and Mousey Brown will be playing at the Flying M Coffeegarage in Nampa. Show starts at 8pm is $3 and open to all ages.

Busy Thursday? Monday (tonight!) Low-Fi will be playing with Keaton Collective at Hijinx starting at 9pm. $3 at the door 21+. Saturday Central City Music Company, Idle Chatter and Tuck Nelson will be playing at The Plank. Free to get in, music starts at 9pm.

Z.V. House fronts Boise band A Seasonal Disguise and has an advanced case of “House Lateness Syndrome” a selective genetic condition plaguing his father, his father’s father before him.

Still exhausted from this weekend? Me too, here’s this week’s reasons to stay sleep deprived!

Our top pick this week is Friday’s A Gun That Shoots Knives, Valu-Pak and Angels of the Dust at the Visual Arts Collective. The night will also feature a sneak preview of Red Light Variety Show’s new act they will be performing at VAC’s Halloween extravaganza. Doors at 8pm, 21+ $5.

Also this week…

Wednesday Neurolux will be hosting Share the Road – Benefit for Kirk Heaton “Wailer” which will feature performances by Hillfolk Noir, Magnetics and more. Thursday also at Neurolux Portland’s Pierced Arrows will join Boise’s The Universal. Both shows are $5 at the door and 21+. Friday At Last an Atlas will join Boise’s The Very Most and Spondee at the Flying M in Nampa. Show starts at 8pm is $2. If you can’t catch them Friday, At Last an Atlas will be playing at the Visual Arts Collective in Boise on Saturday with Dearling Physique and Speedboat. 21+ and $5 at the doors which open at 8pm.

Z.V. House played four sets with three bands in two towns this weekend and thinks it may be time for a nap.

Too much going on this week to wast time with a silly introduction, into the fray we go!

Our top pick for the week is the Finn Riggins/Le Fleur “duel” album release party Friday October 9th at the Visual Arts Collective. Boise’s own Vagerfly and A Seasonal Disguise as well as Portland’s Jared Mees & The Grown Children and Boy Eats Drum Machine will join these two super groups of Boise’s music scene to celebrate the dual release of their new albums. Be there at 8pm, $5 to get in, 21+. For those of you with kids, Finn Riggins will also be doing an all ages in store performance at the Record Exchange on Tuesday. If you purchase a copy of their new album Vs. Wilderness at this show you’ll get free entrance into the album release party at the VAC.

Need something to fill up the other nights of your week? Thursday October 8th Night Genes are having a CD release party at the VAC. Thomas Paul and Chad Cooke will also be performing. Go down, check it out doors at 8pm and it’s only $5 to get in. Also on Thursday Utah’s absolutely incredible Band of Annuals will be playing at the Flying M in Nampa. This show starts at 8pm is $2 to attend and features locals Neo Tundra Cowboy and Two Girls.

Three fantastic shows Saturday! Low-fi and Blacksmith will be at Neurolux $3 at the door. The Unit Breed, The Universal and Good Friday will be rocking VAC, doors at 8pm and only $5. And last but not least The Murders will be playing at the Flying M Coffee Garage in Nampa starting at 8pm, $2.

Before we leave you to your jam packed week of awesome underground music, we here at The Relevant Ballads would like to give a shout out to Boise Community Radio and congratulate them for getting a $227,000 grant! This will go a long way to bringing independent terrestrial radio to the Boise area.
