• Boise Farmers Market. Keeping food and fun local, the Boise Farmers Market kicked off their season Saturday and the downtown Boise vibe was just right.
• Boise’s farmers market hopes to reach new families by accepting food stamps. Though the market opens Saturday, the EBT, or “electronic benefits transfer” machines, will be up and running June 5, just as harvest season is picking up.
• Patio Daddio BBQ: April Festivities.
• Restaurant Eighteen One offers dishes with both flavor and flair. Let’s face it: We Treasure Valley eaters are generally a conservative lot.

• Mmmm…Fried Food. Can a fryer be more than just a pot of hot oil? Yes, it can. It can be the universal cooking tool for a cook who is “in the weeds.” I once had a cook who would throw whatever he could into the fryer: crab legs, lobster tails, fillets, rib-eyes and even “pan-roasted” chicken breast.
• Here’s cheering for a local restaurateur. It was a Tuesday afternoon, and already the crowd was thick. People were ordering food, drinks and watching the games on televisions that were mounted overhead. This is a typical sports-food establishment, trying to make ends meet.

• Syringa Winery to open on Chinden. Syringa Winery is occupying about 4,300 square feet at 3500 Chinden Boulevard, Garden City. A soft opening is planned on the weekend of April 9-10 followed by an open house on the weekend of April 16-17, owner and winemaker Mike Crowley said.

• A Hot Mop+A Walk-In Freezer=Recipe for Disaster. My first job was at a greasy all-you-can eat joint. I was a dishwasher with a short temper and suffered from a distinctly foul mouth. The job was horrible: I would scrape plates, wash dishes and bus tables. I was, in general, the kitchen’s whipping boy.
• General Tso’s Tofu. All hail the General. How does a dish reach cult status? In the case of General Tso’s Tofu from Oriental Express ($5.50 lunch, $8.50 dinner), the slightly sweet, crispy batter is the answer.
